The Bridgend Allotment site was opened in April 2006. It has been designed from the start as an organic site. All plots must be worked following organic guidelines, though these are often up to the individuals interpretation. We have a composting toilet and each plot has a shed with a rain water butt. The water supply to the site is also partly reclaimed rain water.
There are 58 plots on the site, 6 of which are half plots. 4 of the plots are used by the Health Project. Each full plot measures 18 metres by 9 metres. There are also 8 small plots in a paved area which will be used by charities and other local groups, these can easily be converted to raised beds for wheelchair users if this is required.
The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society also has a large demonstration plot.
The site is located in the historic Craigmillar Castle Park in the south of Edinburgh. It is on an old field belonging to the Bridgend Farm. The farm no longer exists but the land now belongs to Edinburgh City Council. The farm can be seen on maps dating back several hundred years and the boundaries of the field which are now the allotment site have remained unchanged for almost as long.
